Breakfast for Brighter Brains

So why is breakfast so important and what is an ideal breakfast combination?

Benefits of breakfast:

  1. If we’re hungry we tend to be moody and don’t control our emotions and actions very well. Eating a nutritious breakfast helps put us in a better mood and improve our behaviour because it steadies the blood sugar.

  2. Studies have shown that persons who skip breakfast or eat junk food for breakfast tend to be overweight. Eating breakfast can help you stay lean and control your weight. If you start your day off eating right then chances are you will eat better food throughout the day.

  3. Breakfast helps us to start the day focussed and with energy. Studies have shown that kids and adults who eat a nutritious breakfast do better at school and work.

A good breakfast would be a combination of complex carbohydrates and proteins that promotes the optimal performance of the brain.

Try these combos!

  • Whole grain toast with melted cheese and a piece of fruit

  • Whole grain tortilla with cheese, tomato sauce and veggies with a glass of milk

  • Oats with flax seeds, wheat germ and fruit pieces with a glass of milk (Sometimes I do overnight oats that I put in the fridge so that it’s ready to go and I can eat before my kids wake up)

  • Peanut butter on apple slices with a glass of milk

  • Whole grain pancakes with greek yogourt and a glass of 100% orange juice

  • All-in-one smoothie like my Power Up Smoothie

I’m sure you can come up with a bunch more. But always remember to avoid foods containing high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils and artificial colours/ flavours.

I like to plan my breakfast the night before so I know exactly what I need to do when I wake up. It gives me a bit more order and gives me the time to eat before my kids get going AND the energy I need to make it through my mornings!

So let’s build brighter brains!
